What is a Civil Surgeon?
A U.S. civil surgeon is a physician designated by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to conduct medical examinations for immigrants seeking adjustment of status to become permanent residents. The role involves assessing applicants for communicable diseases, vaccination status, physical and mental disorders, and substance abuse issues.

The designation of civil surgeons was formalized in 1979, evolving from earlier practices where local public health authorities conducted immigrant medical examinations. The role has grown in importance with increasing immigration and stricter health requirements to ensure public safety and compliance with U.S. immigration laws.
